The structures and properties of atomic clusters smaller than 1 nm are quite different from those of macro solids or usual nano particles. Since the size range of 1 nm is comparable to the wavelength of the free electrons in these clusters, the quantum confinement effects will have obvious effects on their stabilities and properties. Studies on these species help to clarify the basic principles in these small systems and help to find useful cluster system with special properties.
Our studies focus on the chemical reactivity of metal clusters containing coinage metal elements. Kinetic measurements of their reactions using ion trap system and theoretical calculations using DFT methods are combined to reveal the relations between their chemical reactivity and the sizes or geometry structures. We are also trying to develop advanced experimental techniques which can be used in the atomic cluster field and other analysis fields. Members in the Lab: Xiaopeng Xing |
